Elegy for the Arctic

Elegy for the Arctic

The Arctic Ocean is the leading player in one of today’s greatest ecological disasters; the continuing loss of sea ice volume caused by rising temperatures. This not only puts its rich biodiversity at risk but is also having a direct impact on the rest of the planet. The deterioration of the Arctic Ocean could be linked to increasingly frequent extreme weather events in the Northern hemisphere, such as flooding, superstorms and droughts.

Inspired by the devastating effects of climate change on the arctic, Ludovico Einaudi world renowned pianist and composer performed a specially composed piece called ‘Elegy for the Arctic’ against the backdrop of the Wahlenbergbreen glacier (in Svalbard, Norway) in conjunction with Greenpeace.

‘I could see the purity and fragility of this area with my own eyes and interpret a song I wrote to be played upon the best stage in the world,’ einaudi said from onboard the arctic sunrise. ‘it is important that we understand the importance of the arctic, stop the process of destruction and protect it.’ Ludovico Einaudi.

The Sustainable Design Summit is honoured to have been given permission by Greenpeace to share this extraordinarily moving and powerful performance which will be available to view and experience during the summitin a fully immersive digital screening space.
